Maintain e-mail communications

  • Add parents to the various mailing lists, based on their input from our Pack web site.
  • Update a handful of Pack 200 mailboxes so that they redirect to the current volunteer(s) mailboxes. (e.g cubmaster, chairman, Popcorn)
  • Monitor a few incoming Pack mailboxes such as Info or general inquiries.

Maintain Pack's Internet presence.

  • Administer and back-up our Pack web site (WordPress).
  • Post articles to the Pack web site throughout the year. (Often copied from prior events.)
  • Ensure our DNS service and domain name remain current.
  • Send out the monthly Pack Newsletter broadcast, generally written by the Cubmaster and Chairman.
  • Administer the Pack's Paypal account/presence.
  • Manage individual Paypal forms/collections for various 3rd party Pack events throughout the year. (We generally collect the names and funds, then purchase them as a block.)

First, read the BSA Social Media Guidelines.

There is a "Pack200.org management" doc on Google which details accounts and such.
The passwords are not written down anywhere, you have to get those from a previous webmaster.

The main point of this document is to discuss workflow.
Expect to spend at least an hour a week on website and email.

The homepage slider is controlled under the "Bluelight Settings".
The widget is finicky about the size of the image (495x255).

The den pages have variables for room, leader, rank, etc. that are inserted into a template.

Because there is currently no captcha installed, requests for den and pack mailing lists have to be processed manually.

A general todo list, starting in July or August:

  • Add new Tiger leaders to lists and groups.
  • Clear out the google groups for the old WebelosII dens and invite the parents of the rising Wolves
As Tigers join, the parents will need to be invited to that den.
  • Delegate the google groups to the den leaders
(including cross-delegation so leaders can post in dens of same rank)
  • Cleanup links on the Resources page
  • If the annual fee changes, update the about-pack-200 page
  • Update the pack calendar
  • Delegate the den calendars to the leaders
  • Update the room assignments and leaders on the den pages
  • Medical form reminder
  • August newsletter
  • Fall camping
  • September newsletter
  • Popcorn
  • Pack-o-ween
  • October newsletter
  • Raingutter Regatta
  • November newsletter
  • Operation Christmas Child
  • The Carrying Place
  • Cary Christmas Parade
  • Recharter
  • December newsletter
  • Pinewood Derby
  • January newsletter
  • Blue&Gold
  • February newsletter
  • Popcorn Party
  • March newsletter
  • Spring camping
  • April newsletter
  • End-of-year rank-up picnic
  • May newsletter
  • Summertime activities (including Rocket Day)
  • June newsletter
  • July newsletter

There are other things that will need to be put on the calendar, website and newsletter, e.g.:

  • Webelos Woods
  • USS Yorktown camping
  • Adopt-A-Spot

Some of these, e.g. Blue&Gold will also need a signup sheet, or a PayPal form if there is a cost.

There are "Google Webmaster Tools" (sitemap, page speed, etc.) which can be helpful.
I haven't had to make any manual changes to robots.txt (there's a wordpress plugin that generates it).
