Overview - Why change Unit Management Software

PackMaster does not report non-rank advancement or recognition for Internet Advancment. Our local council doesn't manually enter non-rank advancements into Scoutnet. We want as much data as possible to be stored in the main BSA database for all our scouts, so the only path is to have Unit Management Software that fully supports Internet Advancement.

Because the BSA owns Scoutbook it has reportedly good support for Internet Advancement and plans to make Scoutbook and Internet Advancement more linked in the near future.

Data Migration Process

There is a method to export PackMaster data and import into Scoutbook. However, the recent versions of PackMaster "does not allow you to export your advancement data" in the method used for Scoutbook import.

So the method is to save tab delimited advancement reports from PackMaster and using small scripts convert that data into the csv formats that Scoutbook imports.

Status on Sat Feb 11 2017

  • Adult leader data has been imported.
  • Scout directory information (BSA ID, Address, etc.) has been imported.
  • Scout advancement "Adventure" data for the "The New Cub Scout Adventure Program" has been imported
  • My string of daily responses from Scoutbook support has ended.

Issues

  • Two scouts advancement data didn't import. Scoutbook support contacted, but could be resolved via manual entry.
  • Importing advancement data from the "old" 2010 Cub Scout program. Scoutbook support contacted.
  • Fixing the Tiger Den's den type. Scoutbook support contacted.
  • Some items we tracked in PackMaster (Pinewood Derby, Raingutter) do not seem to be in Scoutbook.
  • Cyber Chip is not imported. Scoutbook tracks the grade level of the Cyber Chip, while PackMaster does not. So I don't have complete data to migrate.
  • Adventures that were partially complete are not reported by the PackMaster report tool, and hence are not exported.

To Do

  • Invite all pack leaders to Scoutbook. They should setup their profile and scouting history.
  • Discuss and understand the way Scoutbook works with parents and add parent accounts. Possibly add parents accounts post Blue & Gold.
  • Produce report(s) for Internet Advancement, esp for AOL scouts.
